Whether built to travel in the sky, across the sea or on the ground, vehicles have always continued to fascinate man and, especially, Art Brut creators.
Through their various depictions of vehicles, such creators have perhaps sought to assert themselves, or else to regain a certain control over their existence in the wake of certain hard knocks of life. The very act of drawing be it cars, boats, planes, trains, bikes, or rockets, enables some of them to escape their everyday fare, or even to explore inner territories of their own.
Vehicles serves as a launchpad for a new series of exhibitions comprising works from the museum holdings and scheduled to take place every two years. These "Art Brut biennials" will grant visitors a chance to discover the wealth of works in its collections; today, these comprise over 60,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, textile works, and writings. Pride of place is to be granted to both the historic works that, forming the core of the museum, were originally collected by Jean Dubuffet, and those that have been acquired over the years since then.
Featuring works by around forty creators, Vehicles is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated catalogue. Published jointly with Five Continents Editions of Milan (Italy), this catalogue is the first of a new series of publications linked to the museum's thematic exhibitions.
